Obituary for Carl Ray Averitt Jr.
Carl Ray Averitt, Jr., 77, of Paducah, KY, died Sunday, May 20, 2018 at his home.
Carl was born in Paducah on December 29, 1940 to Carl Ray Averitt, Sr. and Ella Thomas (Ferguson) Averitt. He graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School in 1958 and went on to get degrees from Murray State University and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He taught mathematics for many years, beginning his teaching career in the Covington, KY area (Holmes High School) from 1962-1971. From 1971-1999, Carl taught mathematics within the Paducah City School System, retiring from Paducah Tilghman in 1999. He also taught at Paducah Community College.
Carl loved music and he began his career as an organist at Aldersgate Methodist Church before he had his driver's license; his parents had to drive him to the church. He had organist positions in Covington, KY and Cincinnati before moving back to Paducah. In the Paducah area, he served as organist or interim organist at several different churches over the course of his career including First Christian Church, Fountain Avenue Methodist Church, First Methodist Church-Mayfield and First Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his brother, William Averitt and wife Frances of Winchester, Virginia. A lover of all animals, he leaves behind his beloved shih tzus, Tai Wan and Jon Ling.
Memorial services will be held at 11am Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Lynn Shurley officiating. Visitation will begin at 10am Wednesday at the funeral home.
