Rev. Deward Hurst
Rev. Deward Hurst Tuesday, August 11, 2009
Rev. Deward Hurst, 76, of Paducah was called home at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at his residence.
Deward, a retired Baptist minister, surrendered to preach at the age of 16 and spent the next 60 years honoring that commitment. Taking his first full-time position as pastor of Grantsburg Baptist Church at age 19, Hurst went on to serve ten different churches in Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky. During that time he earned a BA degree from Murray State University as well as serving as moderator of the West Union Association and three full terms on the Kentucky Baptist Convention Executive Board. Deward retired in 1999 after serving ten years as director of Jonathan Creek Baptist Assembly in Hardin, Ky. However, he went on to serve in nine different interim positions, his last at Gilbertsville Baptist Church, where he served until May of this year when his health began to fail after a four-year fight with cancer.
Deward is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of fifty-six years, June Hurst; and one daughter, Cindy Boone and husband Donnie of Fredonia; two sons, Greg Hurst and wife Amy of Paducah and Doug Hurst, also of Paducah. Deward was blessed with four grandchildren, Toby Boone, Brandon Hurst, Samantha Flood and Ashton Hurst, all of Paducah, as well as two great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Taylor Boone; brother, Lewis Hurst and wife LaRece of Paducah; one sister, Florence Flatt and husband W.T. of Paducah; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hurst and Verna Hurst, both of Paducah, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Thomas and Jewell Florence Jackson Hurst; and four brothers, Albert Leslie, James, Richard and Billy Joe Hurst.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah. Rev. Charles Frazier of Zion's Cause Baptist Church, where Rev. Hurst was a member and pastor-emeritus, will officiate. Burial will follow in Maplelawn Park Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Zion's Cause Baptist Church Building Fund, 1532 U.S. Highway 68 West, Benton, KY, 42025.
