Elliott Winning Cockrell Jr., age 84, of West Paducah died peacefully at home on January 4, 2010, of complications from a disease that left him severely handicapped toward the end of his life.
Mr. Cockrell was born in Hinds County, Miss., and settled in Paducah in 1939. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War ll and saw his first action during the North African campaign. Posted to duty on LSTs (landing ship tanks) he served his country during the invasions in Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio, the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach, the battle for Okinawa, and was part of the early occupation force in Japan. He was a master machinist who apprenticed at the Paducah Illinois Central Railroad shop, worked for 16 years at the Union Carbide uranium enrichment plant and for 9 years at Shelton Metrology, and founded Cockrell Industrial Inc. in West Paducah in 1979. For more than 50 years, he filled many lay positions in service to Olivet Baptist Church and was honored by that church with selection as a Deacon Emeritus. He was recognized by the state of Kentucky in 1979 when appointed a Kentucky Colonel. Above all, he was a beloved husband, and an honored and revered father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jo Ann Vance Cockrell; his children and their spouses, Dale and Lucinda Cockrell of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Ritchie and Melissa Cockrell of Paducah, Joe Pat and Ruth Ann Cockrell of West Paducah, Dana and Rachel Cockrell of West Paducah, and Kerin Ann and Russell Stewart of La Center. He is also survived by a stepbrother, Kenneth Myatt of Atlanta, Ga. He enjoyed and took pride in his 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
An only child, he was preceded in death by his mother, Johnnye Ritchie Suffill; his stepmother, Virginia Futrell Hill; and his father, Elliott Winning Cockrell Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Tucker, Rev. Skip Parsons and Rev. Bud Russell officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Maplelawn Park Cemetery.
