Louis Henry "Bud" Schmidt Jr., 87, died at his home at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009.
A retired fruit and vegetable farmer and the former owner of Schmidt Farms, Bud was active in both the state and McCracken County Farm Bureau organizations, serving in several leadership roles. He partnered with the University of Kentucky Agriculture Department to test experimental farming methods. He was a recipient of a Woodmen of the World's Conservation Award also.
Mr. Schmidt was a life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served as a head usher for more than 50 years as well as in other leadership positions.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Mullen Schmidt; three daughters, Jennie and husband Richard Boyarski of Paducah, Julia and husband Paul Norvell of Pensacola, Fla., and Dorothy "Dutch" Thurman and husband Charles Thurman of Paducah; one grandson, Louis and wife Carolyn Norvell of Mobile, Ala.; and four great-grandchildren, Henry, Meg, Caroline and Samuel Norvell of Mobile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Henry Schmidt and Louise Baumer Schmidt; four sisters, Pauline Genther, Laura Schamburg, Emma Gholson and Ruth Jordan Gholson; and one brother, James Schmidt.
Graveside services will be conducted at Maplelawn Park Cemetery Thursday, June 18, 2009, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Donner officiating.
Pallbearers are Paul Schamburg, Danny Hadfield, John Carpenter, Bruce Huyck, David Jordan, Nathan Huyck and Rick Mullen. Honorary pallbearers are his caregivers, Mildred Coomer, Candice Summers, Mary Finney and Jennifer Long.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 211 S. 21st, Paducah, KY 42001; or Lourdes Hospice, P.O. Box 7100, Paducah, KY 42002-7100.
