Martha Lain Choate, 95, (formerly of Paducah) died Friday, January 30, 2009, at 3:10 a.m. in the sanctuary at St. Pauls in South Bend, Ind.
Martha had moved to South Bend in 1999 to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Luke and Diane Choate of Mishawaka, who were at her bedside when she died Friday morning. A native of Corinth, Miss., Martha lived for 45 years in Paducah, where she owned and operated Choate's Antiques Shop at 1623 Broadway. The shop featured fine imported English furniture and gifts. Martha and her employees held their first Christmas open house in the '60s, an event that became an annual happening, and was soon joined by other area businesses. She retired from Choate's Antiques in 1989 at the age of 75.
Mrs. Choate was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford, at the age of 75; and sisters Clemmie Collins of Cleveland, Miss., and Nancy Potts of Yazoo City, Miss., and Paducah.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Richard Choate of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Terry Rourke (Tom) of Sudbury, Mass.; and nephews Andy Griffin (Karla) of Memphis and Robert Griffin and partner Ron Clemmer of Asheville, N.C. Martha also leaves behind 3 great-grandsons, Austin, Lain and Richard (Rourke) of Sudbury.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at Roth Funeral Chapel in Paducah. The Rev. Frank Queen will officiate.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Roth.
Private graveside services will be in Maplelawn Park Cemetery in Paducah.
